Make Me A Mixtape Vol.3

Blush Response is the work of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joey Gonzalez. Blush Response’s sound can be described as a combination of the synth pop of bands such as Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, and IAMX, and the hard edged industrial found in acts such as Nine Inch Nails, Orgy, and Skinny Puppy. It is a highly electronic sound. Joey released his first single, "Reduce you", on June 2nd, 2009 and since then has been working around the clock to produce his full studio length album "We are Replicants."

Joey takes some time to sit down and make us a mix tape.

Opening Track - You're Theme Song.
David Bowie - Breaking Glass. This song will be played at my funeral, the happy go lucky attitude of it combined with the absurdity of the lyrics pretty much define my life. The amount of drugs Bowie was on at the time really shine through, and this makes it all the more attractive to me. Not because of his drug use, but rather the state of mind one would have to be in to come up with something as ridiculous (in a good way) as this song. Its almost Lewis Carroll like. First album you owned
The Prodigy - Breathe - I didn't actually own any albums in 1997, but when I stole this from my aunt's cd collection everything changed. This song is singlehandedly responsible for me ever wanting to make music. When I heard something electronic with serious attitude it kind of blew my mind.
Musician dead or alive you would most like to play with
Alec Empire - Everything Starts with a Fuck - The sheer visceral assault of noise on your ears in this song blows my mind every time. I have yet to find anything that hits harder, and anything that has as much soul at the same time. I'd really love to work with Alec Empire because I'd want to pick his brain. He basically invented an entire musical genre, which is something not many musicians can claim to have done. The fact that said genre is also filled with an attitude I can relate to (read: "Fuck You"), only makes me want to collaborate more.
Favourite dance track
Nitzer Ebb - Join in the Chant - Hearing this was a revelation for me. It was almost like the anthem for communist Russia coming out of my speakers, with its machine like drums and the repetitiveness of the message. Once I got into Nitzer Ebb with all their imagery and their inspired look and artwork, I understood the meaning of "Industrial".
Best Love Song
Depeche Mode - Stripped - I think this one kind of speaks for itself really. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, with the sampled motorcycle engine beat, to the synth pads that carry the bridge, to the direness in Dave and Martin's voices, its just chilling to me.
Break up song
Nine Inch Nails - Gave Up - Maybe I've had one too many bad breakups, but this is my go to song in a fit of anger after ending things. I'm a big fan of self destruction for one reason or another, and this song helps me capture that recklessness and urge to scream post breakup. I'm a bit of a goth, sue me :)
Best Male vocal
Iggy Pop - China Girl - This vocal gives me chills every time, especially when he screams "Its in the white of my eyes", you can just almost feel what he was feeling.
Guilty Pleasure
Mindless Self Indulgence - I Hate Jimmy Page - MSI is somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, mainly because they don't take themselves seriously at all, but their fans do. I saw them live once and it was the loudest show I've ever seen. NOBODY commands the crowd like Jimmy Urine. He literally had them doing anything he'd say. It was a great exercise in psychology and crowd hysteria.
Saddest song in the world
Sneaker Pimps - Flowers and Silence - The despair in this song is almost overwhelming. This is the song I listen to when I hit absolute bottom, its almost a way to redeem my spirit. You can just hear Chris Corner's never ending angst captured in one moment, and it just resonantes with me so much. Everyone has felt this way at one point or another in their life, but nobody has put it so perfectly as Chris Corner did with this song.
Closing Track - The old faithful
Bjork - Pluto - Being that I'm a bit of a dramatic person, I often find myself coming to this song to scream my fucking head off. Homogenic is one of my favorite albums of all time, and this song captures an element of punk rock that punk these days can never touch. This is an odd one for Bjork considering her repertoire, but I think it captures a side of her that is often left alone. A side that I really can relate to.

Another Day to Dress Up

want Time to feature another blog that I am just so super in love with right now! Megan Stewart is possible one of the most fashionable young woman that I have ever encountered. Her blog, Another Day to Dress up, is the most wonderful catalouge of her daily outfits and thoughts. Okay. I know that you are thinking, There are so many fashion blogs out there, and you are right. But Megan's blog is just so wonderful, her sense of style makes me a little weak at the knees.

Megan drops by between outfit changes to talk about Mac 'n' Cheese, vintage animal portraits and growing up

Hi my name is Megan But you can call me Megan/Megg/Meggstatus My blog is a place for me to inspire and express my creative energy I take me coffee in tea form (coffee makes me jittery, I'd rather have tea)My favourite thing to coook is home made macaroni and cheese from my mom's secret recipe The best thing I have learnt in the last 7 days is some people might be crazy, but it's still fun to listen to them talk In my bedroom you will find hundreds of pieces of clothing and a bunch of vintage animal portraintsfind My favorite book is Kaftka on the Shore One thing I cant live without is my family, friends, boyfriend and baby blanket In my handbag you will find **searching through bag** make-up, wallet, camera, tripod, chap stick, medicine, keys, gum, deodorant, ketchup, bracelets, rings.... basically my life! In 1999 I was rolling my eyes at the thought of Y2K The last song that I listened to was "Box" by Tokyo Police Club Last night I dreamt about I wish I remembered! I think everyone should know that style is an expression of yourself, you will never make everyone happy. The best advice my mum ever gave me was to do things for my happiness and the rest will fall into place I am inspired by everything, old movies, vintage photographs, people on the street, nature, editorials, my fellow bloggers. I draw inspirations from too many sources to count. In 2010 I will accept the fact that I'm now a grown up

Oh isnt she just adorable! I want to scoop her up and put her in my pocket and keep her forever! But instead, I will settle for reading her blog and being inspired by her wonderful style. You should to. Check out what wonderful outfit Megan is wearing today, over at her blog, Another Day to Dress Up. I promise, you will love it!

We are Family.

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. - Dr Seuss

I was sifting through some old photographs the other day looking for pictures of myself to use for my 21st birthday invitation (more on that later!) and I found so many old photographs of me and my family that made me giggle so much. So, in the spirit of family, I thought I would dedicate this post to the lovely people who call me their own!

This is of me and my cousin Jess. I think we around the 3year old mark in this photograph. Its just so cute though right? I Love it. I remember this pretty clearly actually we had a super fun day hanging out with my mum, down at the beach. Its kind of crazy actually, Jess and I lost contact for quite a long time while we were growing up (there goes a bit of that family drama!!) but over the last few years have had the chance to reconnect, get to know each other again and even live together for a while. It was great waking up on a sunday morning and making breakfast and renting boxset DVDs and creating an airband for the opening song of the OC... did I mention we were awesome? haha.

This one is me and my aunty. Anna was 11 when I was born, so I remember vividly always looking up to her. She was so hip! I remember her having a New Kids on the Block teeshirt that she let me borrow once, I felt so cool! I was probably about 3 in this photo too, we use to hang out and do fun stuff like this all the time. This photo I remember being taken at the back of my grandparents home one summer. There is a sweet sequence of about 5 photos where I take the cup of water and throw it on Anna's head! Opps!

This is me and my grandad. This was taken almost 9 weeks after I was born on the 26th of August 1989. Growing up I have always been close to my Grandfather, I have vivid memories of us sitting downstairs in the cellar of his home, him sipping on straight whiskey and me sipping on my pretend whiskey (which was actually just gingerale) My grandad now has a luxury housebus, and him and his wife travel around this beautiful country doing fun things like fruit picking and such. I dont get to see him all that often, but love him very dearly. In fact, one of my next tattoos is going to be for him. He doesnt even know yet!

This is me and my mum. Im 10 and a half weeks old in this photo. My mum and I have always had a really really close relationship. I am an only child and was raised by just my mum. She honestly amazes me, she gave up so much to stay at home and raise me right. And since I started school she has worked her way up the corperate ladder and has proved beyond a doubt that if you want something bad enough you can get it. She has taught me to be a strong, independant and caring young woman and she really is my hero.

These are Anna's two precious little boys, My darling cousins, Xavier who is now 5 and Harvery who is now 2. They are the most wonderful Little Kids in the world, we hang out and do fun stuff like baking and minigolf. They live just around the road from me, so I get to see them alot, its so special being part of little peoples lives!!

This photo was taken on my 18th birthday (nearly 3 years ago now!) Its my whole family. My cousin Jess, Anna and her Husband Aaron, Cousin Harvey (who is just a bump in this photo) My Grandad and his wife Robyn, Me, My Mum and My cousin Xavier.

So that is my amazing family. They are pretty special, and I love them to death.
Say cheese guys!

One more time... Thats more like it!

It was nice to take a break from the reality of day to day living and just relax and party with some of the most wonderful people I know. Sunday night was full of music, and dancing, and drinking and photos and story telling. Followed by a perfect monday out in Takapuna and Devonport, enjoying the sun and the beach and the wonders that are right here in this beautiful country. Days like that really make me appreciate New Zealand so much more.

Also! Im excited to see I have 50 Followers! Oh Boy. I remember when the first person decided to follow me (Yes, it was my cousin jess over at the beat my heart skips but still!!) I was oh so very excited. And now, there are 50 of you little lovelies who continue to make my day everytime you comment or leave me little loves in my corner of the web. So! Oh Happy Easter

Hello dear friends, Ive missed you. I decided to get out of my city for the weekend and take a drive up to Auckland City for the weekend with my friend Ruth. Roadtrips are always fun and we decided that we had a few days off so why not do something a little bit fun. So we left home around lunch time and 800kms later (around 500miles for all you beautiful American folk) we arrived, after a lot of singing, dancing, and driving. And, boy, dont I love this city. I really do, its full of the most lovely people. Last night infact we went to my local bar up here (yes, I have a local in a city that I dont live in.. haha) and had a beer, caught up with some lovelies that I hadnt seen in a while, and then went to visit a friend at midnight, stayed at her place and had a good gossip and giggle for 3 or 4 hours and then headed back to bed. It was just lovely to spend some good time with people who are genuinely lovely. Its refreshing. Tonight, we are lucky enough to be up here the same time as a friends band are playing a show, so, we are going to head along to that, and have probably a few too many beers and alot of laughs. It will be delightful.

I hope you all are having a wonderful break, whether it be with your friends, your family, or a block of chocolate infront of the television and a boxset of your favourite sitcom. And Im also excited to say, that shortly (just 2 followers to go!) ill be hosting another fun giveaway of some of my favourite things.

Happy Easter Kids. I love you!

The Little Things

I have been feeling a little drained lately. Its been hard to keep up with everything. Running a life and 2 businesses and a day job is tricky, but at the same time wonderful. I have been busy photographing some of the most amazing people, celebrating weddings, engagements and new life. And I have been designing like a mad woman, trying to get some new prints together and a jewellery venture off the ground (Nothing like keeping busy right!?) Dont get me wrong for one second, I love what I do, I just have to remind myself every now and then of the little things. The little things that keep me going, and keep me inspired.

Stationary. There is nothing like a new journal, or a postcard, or some cute letter writing paper. I am such a sucker for stationary.

Letter writing. I love to sit down with a piece of paper and a pen, and just write to someone, and even more than that, I love recieving letters in the mail, They always brighten my day, no matter what the day may have brought.

Lipsticks. Oh I love wearing lipstick. I think a splash of colour can totally change your mood.

Blogging. Reading your lovely blogs, and writing my own, really this whole wonderful community gives me a second to breathe in amongst it all. Oh and your comments just make me smile endlessly.

Baking. I have been baking alot lately, and its been making me smile a bunch. There is nothing nicer than that home baking smell wafting through your house.

Music. Generic? Maybe, But music is my soul language. It gets me, and I get it. Lately, ive been listening to a lot of my old favourites. Things I listened to 5 or more years ago. They bring smiles to my faces.

Beards, Tattoos, Photos. Nuff Said.

Friends. Ive been able to take a bit of time just to reconnect with some old friends lately, and its been awesome. Its so nice to be able to catch up with people and just sit down and have a vanilla latte, or a cup of tea and maybe even a cupcake, and chat about old times, and share new stories.

TV on DVD Boxsets. A total weakness of mine. Lately ive been watching Sons Of Anarchy. If you like beards, motorcycles, and bad boys...watch this series. You wont regret it.

Crafting. Oh its wonderful to be able to sit down and make something from nothing, I tend to get really messy when im crafting about, but it is always oh so theraputic for me.

What are the little things that make you happy? Oh I am sure that they are wonderful.
